The setting
A funeral surrounded by gardens and daylight
The Pavilion is one of two spaces at the Horniman Museum & Gardens where a funeral can take place. Unlike the Victorian Conservatory, this is a modern building, with a timber interior, full-height windows and glass doors that open onto a private terrace.
From this quiet corner of the Gardens, the views reach across the landscaped grounds, the Animal Walk and the London skyline. It is a lovely alternative to a traditional chapel for a smaller gathering.
You can keep the ceremony simple or include music, readings, spoken tributes, flowers and religious or non-religious traditions. We can help you think through what will work in the space and how to arrange the day.

What could a funeral here look like?
A favourite song. A few words from the people who knew someone best. The gardens just beyond the glass.
The Pavilion lends itself to a smaller, more informal ceremony. Chairs can be arranged for a seated gathering, with the coffin present. Its simple architecture leaves room for personal touches without needing elaborate decoration.
There is a strict maximum of 60 seated guests for a ceremony. If you're expecting more people, the Conservatory offers a larger setting.

The Pavilion is a place for the funeral ceremony, not a crematorium. Afterwards there can be a committal at a crematorium, cemetery or natural burial ground, with or without guests.

Capacity, catering and costs
The Pavilion seats up to 60 people for a funeral ceremony. This is a strict capacity limit. The Horniman also advertises a standing capacity for other types of event, but that is not the funeral ceremony allowance.
The venue can be hired for funerals, memorials and wakes, with access to its private terrace. A wake may also take place in the Conservatory, subject to availability.

Price on request. The Horniman will confirm the Pavilion's funeral hire charge, what is included and the time available for the service and setup.
Additional time for a wake, staffing, catering and any extras are priced separately.
Funeral director fees
Our funeral director fees are separate from the venue hire. We'll provide a written estimate covering our arrangements, the coffin, transport, ceremony and any cremation or burial charges.
Food and drink
The Horniman's on-site caterers, Colicci, can provide drinks, lunches and afternoon teas. Bespoke catering may be arranged through approved suppliers such as Suzanne James, Caiger & Co or Punjab Events, subject to the Horniman's approval.

What will it cost?
The Pavilion's funeral hire price has not been published as a confirmed figure. We won't present a general event-hire rate as a funeral quotation. We'll ask the Horniman for the correct price and include it in your estimate alongside our fees and any other services you choose.

The Pavilion's terrace can allow guests to step outside and take in the gardens. Subject to the hire arrangements, there may be time for refreshments and conversation after the ceremony.

Would the Conservatory be a better fit?
If you're expecting more than 60 people, or would prefer the atmosphere of a Victorian glasshouse, you may want to consider the Horniman Conservatory instead. It seats 120 with additional standing room.

Can you hold a funeral in the Pavilion at the Horniman?
Yes. The Horniman offers its Pavilion for funerals, memorials and wakes. Poetic Endings can organise the funeral ceremony, liaise with the venue and arrange cremation or burial separately.
How many people can attend?
The Pavilion has a strict limit of 60 seated guests for a funeral ceremony. If you expect more people, the Conservatory seats 120, with additional standing room.
Can the coffin be present?
Yes. We can arrange the funeral with the coffin present in the Pavilion, including the hearse, coffin bearers if needed, and the layout of the ceremony.
Does the cremation take place at the Pavilion?
No. Cremation or burial takes place separately, for example at Honor Oak or West Norwood, or at another cemetery or natural burial ground. It can happen on the same day or a different day, with or without guests attending.
Can we have a wake or refreshments afterwards?
Yes, subject to the venue's availability and hire terms. The Pavilion has a private terrace and can be used for a gathering. The Conservatory is another possibility. Catering and any additional time or staffing are charged separately.
How much does it cost to hire the Pavilion?
The Pavilion's funeral hire price is available on request. We will confirm the charge directly with the Horniman, including setup time and what is provided. Poetic Endings' funeral director fees, the coffin, transport, cremation or burial and optional extras are separate.
Can the funeral be religious or non-religious?
Yes. We can help arrange a religious, non-religious or mixed ceremony, with a celebrant, minister or someone important to you leading it, subject to the venue's arrangements.
Where should guests arrive?
The Pavilion is in the Horniman Gardens, near Horniman Drive. We'll confirm the entrance and arrival arrangements with the venue, along with any access requirements, so guests know where to go.
