The setting
An extraordinary place for a funeral
Built for the Horniman family in 1894, the Grade II listed Conservatory is a beautiful Victorian glasshouse, its intricate ironwork and patterned floors framed by the greenery of the Horniman Gardens.
It feels different from a traditional crematorium chapel. There is space for music, spoken tributes, readings, flowers and quiet moments together, with daylight coming through the glass walls and roof.
A ceremony can be religious, non-religious or a mixture of traditions. We start with the person who has died and the people gathering to remember them, then help you work out what sort of funeral feels appropriate.

Decide what comes next
There can be a committal at a crematorium or cemetery, with or without guests, on the same or another day. You may prefer to stay and gather for refreshments, or move to another venue for the wake.

What could the ceremony look like?
A favourite piece of music. Someone telling a story. A moment of silence beneath the glass roof.
There's room for familiar traditions or something entirely your own. The Conservatory can be arranged with chairs facing the coffin, and the ceremony can include readings, live music, recorded music and tributes.
The Horniman is not a crematorium, so the funeral ceremony and the cremation or burial are separate arrangements. We'll help you decide how you would like that part of the day to work.
Cremation or burial
After the funeral at the Horniman
You can have a full funeral ceremony in the Conservatory and a shorter committal afterwards. Some people go to the crematorium or burial ground together; others choose a private or unattended committal.
West Norwood Crematorium
Another option for a committal after the ceremony, within one of London's historic Victorian cemeteries. Burial and natural burial can also be considered.

Capacity, catering and costs
The Conservatory accommodates 120 seated guests, with plenty of additional room for standing. We can discuss seating and access arrangements with the Horniman team.
The space can be hired for funerals, memorials and wakes. A wake can also take place in the Pavilion, subject to availability.
Venue hire
£2,400 to hire the Conservatory for a one-hour funeral service, including setup time, 120 chairs and stewards for the gates.
Additional hire hours for a wake, food and drink, and any further staffing are charged separately.
Funeral director fees
Our funeral director fees are separate from the £2,400 venue hire. We'll prepare a full written estimate, including the coffin, transport, ceremony arrangements and cremation or burial costs where relevant.
Food and drink
The Horniman's on-site caterers, Colicci, can provide drinks, lunches and afternoon teas. For a more bespoke menu, you can enquire with Suzanne James Ltd, Caiger & Co or Punjab Events.
Catering and any additional staffing are priced separately.

Poetic Endings is an independent, female-led funeral director based in Forest Hill, very close to the Horniman.
The Horniman Museum & Gardens refers people interested in holding funerals there to us. We understand how the ceremony, venue arrangements and committal need to fit together, and can take responsibility for coordinating the funeral itself.
We're not interested in putting everyone through the same set of arrangements. We'll listen to what's important to you, explain the possibilities and costs, and guide you through the practical decisions.
You can have something traditional, something unconventional, or something quietly in between. Our role is to make the arrangements thoughtful, clear and manageable.

Can you really have a funeral at the Horniman Museum?
Yes. The Horniman Museum & Gardens offers the Conservatory and Pavilion for funerals, memorials and wakes. Poetic Endings can help arrange a ceremony in the Conservatory and coordinate everything needed afterwards.
How many people can attend a funeral in the Conservatory?
There are 120 seats, plus plenty of room for standing. We can confirm the final guest layout and access arrangements with the Horniman.
Can the coffin be present at the ceremony?
Yes. A funeral can take place in the Conservatory with the coffin present. We can arrange transport, positioning of the coffin and the ceremony itself.
Does the cremation take place at the Horniman?
No. The Conservatory is a ceremony venue, not a crematorium. Cremation or burial takes place separately, perhaps at Honor Oak or West Norwood Crematorium, a cemetery or a natural burial ground. This can be the same day or another day.
Can we stay for a wake or have refreshments afterwards?
Yes, subject to availability. A wake can take place in the Conservatory or Pavilion. The Horniman’s on-site caterers Colicci can provide food and drink, and bespoke caterers are also available. Extra hire time, catering and staffing are charged separately.
