The setting
A Georgian landmark, newly restored
Brockwell Hall has stood at the centre of the park since 1813. Its classical exterior and elevated position are familiar to people who know Herne Hill and Brixton; inside, a substantial restoration has brought the historic rooms back into use.
The project also created the Cressingham Suite, a light-filled contemporary space opening onto an enclosed courtyard. Timber, glass and the surrounding trees make it feel very different from a conventional crematorium chapel.
There is room for a ceremony with music, readings and spoken tributes, or for something more pared back. We can help you decide how to use the space and what needs to happen afterwards.

We arrange the funeral itself, including the ceremony and the onward arrangements for cremation or burial. Brockwell Hall manages its own venue hire and any separate reception.

Decide on the committal
Cremation or burial takes place somewhere else, later that day or on another day. You can attend the committal, or choose an unattended one and spend more time together at Brockwell Hall.
The Cressingham Suite & Courtyard
A flexible space for a personal ceremony
A room filled with natural light, opening onto a courtyard and the greenery of Brockwell Park.
For a larger gathering, the Cressingham Suite can be arranged with seating facing the coffin and space for a speaker, celebrant or musicians. The adjoining courtyard gives guests somewhere to step outside.
The venue lists up to 200 theatre-style seats. We would confirm the precise layout, access arrangements and equipment with the events team before booking.
What makes the venue distinctive
The Cressingham Suite is a modern addition to a historic Georgian house. Its timber structure, glass doors and adjoining courtyard offer a different atmosphere from the gallery rooms and crematoria you may be more familiar with.
Other rooms
Brockwell Hall also has smaller restored rooms, including the Bristowe Room (up to 50 theatre-style). A funeral in another room would need specific agreement with the venue.

The Cressingham Suite and Courtyard is the main space for a funeral at Brockwell Hall. The largest published theatre-style layout is 200 seats; smaller arrangements may be more appropriate.
Our funeral director fees are separate from the venue hire. We'll put together a clear written estimate covering the funeral, transport and the eventual cremation or burial.
Venue hire
Venue hire is around £1,900 for a funeral ceremony lasting 60–90 minutes. This includes setup time, chairs, a duty manager and security.
We'll confirm the hire price and what is included with Brockwell Hall when we discuss dates with you.
Guest numbers
Up to 200 seated in a theatre-style Cressingham Suite arrangement. The venue also lists 160 for dining and smaller capacities in its historic rooms.
Accessibility
The restored venue has wheelchair access, step-free routes, lifts and accessible toilets. Hearing-loop facilities are listed by VenueLambeth. We'll confirm the arrangements for your ceremony.
Food and drink
Catering and any separate reception are arranged with Brockwell Hall's events team and their agreed suppliers. Extra venue time, catering and staffing are charged separately.
Understanding the total cost
Venue hire of around £1,900 is separate from Poetic Endings' funeral director fees, the coffin and transport, and any cremation or burial charges. A wake, catering or additional hire time is arranged and priced separately. We'll check the arrangements with the venue and give you a clear written estimate.
After the ceremony
Cremation or burial afterwards
There is no crematorium at Brockwell Hall. A committal can take place at a crematorium or burial ground, attended or unattended, after the ceremony or on another day.
West Norwood Crematorium
Another nearby option for cremation, with its own historic cemetery setting. Burial and natural burial can also be considered.

Gathering afterwards
You may want to stay at Brockwell Hall for refreshments and conversation after the funeral. The Cressingham Suite can also be arranged for a reception, with food and drink provided by suppliers agreed with the venue.
A wake is separate from the funeral arrangements. Brockwell Hall's events team can discuss additional hire time, catering and the use of the rooms or courtyard.
Alternatively, you may prefer a café, pub or other space around Herne Hill or Brixton. We can point you towards places to explore.

Brockwell Hall stands near the centre of Brockwell Park, above Herne Hill. Herne Hill railway station is nearby; Brixton Underground station and local buses are other ways to reach the park.
