Funerals at Dulwich Picture Gallery

A funeral surrounded by remarkable art, in one of London's most extraordinary buildings.

We work in partnership with Dulwich Picture Gallery to arrange funeral and memorial ceremonies in its beautiful Soane Gallery. It is a chance to gather somewhere quite different from a crematorium chapel, in a place shaped by art, architecture and history.

Thinking about a funeral at Dulwich Picture Gallery?

We can explain how the Gallery works, check suitable Mondays and prepare a clear estimate for the ceremony and what happens afterwards.

The setting

Art, architecture and a place to remember

Dulwich Picture Gallery opened to the public in 1817. Designed by Sir John Soane, it is widely recognised as the world's first purpose-built public art gallery.

The Soane Gallery has a sequence of interconnected rooms, vaulted ceilings, rich red walls and paintings by artists including Rembrandt, Rubens, Gainsborough, Canaletto and Poussin. It makes an extraordinary setting for music, readings, personal tributes and the presence of the coffin.

There is something particularly fitting about gathering to remember a life in a building devoted to looking closely, thinking and remembering. You don't have to be an art enthusiast to appreciate the atmosphere, but it can be a particularly meaningful choice for someone who loved painting, architecture or the arts.

A special partnership

A gallery that opens its doors for funerals

Dulwich Picture Gallery has chosen to work with Poetic Endings to offer funeral and memorial ceremonies in its historic galleries.

This isn't simply a venue we can hire. The Gallery publicly names Poetic Endings as its funeral partner, and together we help make it possible to hold a thoughtful, personal ceremony among the artworks.

We coordinate the funeral: caring for the person who has died, arranging the coffin and transport, working with the celebrant or minister, and liaising with the Gallery's events team. The Gallery manages its own venue hire and any separate wake or reception arrangements.

Arranging the ceremony

How it works

We'll work with the Gallery and the people involved in the funeral to make sure the day feels considered and everything works in practice.

01 / The date

Choose a Monday

Funerals and memorials currently take place on Mondays when the Gallery is closed to the public. We'll check availability with its events team and discuss which space will suit the number of guests.

02 / The funeral

Shape the ceremony

We'll help you arrange the coffin, flowers, a celebrant or minister, music, readings, timings and the order of service. The ceremony can reflect religious traditions, be non-religious, or draw on both.

03 / Afterwards

Plan the committal

The coffin can travel afterwards to a crematorium, cemetery or natural burial ground, with or without guests. That can happen on the same day or on another day. A wake is a separate arrangement.

Inside the Soane Gallery

What might a funeral here look like?

Chairs arranged beneath the paintings. The coffin at the centre. Favourite music filling the room.

There is space for a traditional funeral ceremony, or something less conventional. A small gathering of 20 can feel private within one of the smaller rooms, while larger arrangements can accommodate up to 200 guests, subject to the Gallery agreeing the layout.

We have arranged funerals here for people with a love of art and for people who simply wanted somewhere beautiful and personal. The setting gives you room to create a ceremony that feels true to the person being remembered.

The practical details

Capacity, hire and costs

Funeral ceremonies are available on Mondays, when Dulwich Picture Gallery is closed to the public. We can discuss different room arrangements for small and large gatherings.

Venue hire is separate from the services provided by Poetic Endings, and from cremation or burial charges. We'll bring everything together in a written estimate before you decide.

Capacity

From around 20 guests in a smaller gallery to up to 200 in the main space, subject to the agreed ceremony layout.

Venue hire

£1,800 indicative funeral hire for a one-hour service, including setup time and 120 chairs. Additional chairs and hire hours may cost more. We will confirm the current fee with the Gallery before you decide.

Funeral director fees

Our funeral director fees are separate, as are the coffin, transport, ceremony and any cremation or burial costs. We'll provide a full estimate rather than leave you to add up different parts.

Music and ceremony

Live and recorded music, readings, tributes and other elements can be discussed with us and the Gallery's events team. We'll confirm the sound and technical arrangements for your particular ceremony.

About the venue fee

The £1,800 figure is a guide rather than a guaranteed current quote. The Gallery sets its own hire fees and terms; we will check the final price and inclusions before anything is booked.

Cremation or burial

What happens after the funeral?

The Gallery is a place for the funeral ceremony, not a crematorium. After the service, the coffin is taken to a crematorium or burial ground, that day or on another day. You can choose whether anyone attends the committal.

After the service

Gathering afterwards

You may want to spend more time together after the ceremony.

The Gallery can host a separate wake or reception in its galleries, the Linbury Room or Gallery Café, with catering arranged through the Gallery's team.

Poetic Endings organises the funeral and any onward cremation or burial. If you'd like a wake, you can make those arrangements directly with the Gallery or another venue. We can point you towards useful options, including places in Dulwich Village.
