Remembering and Celebrating the Life of
Steve Brandl
26th August 1960 - 9th June 2025
Our darling and beloved Steve Brandl, passed away peacefully on
9th June 2025. His wife, Jo, three children, Charlie, Daniel and Grace, sister Pat and Charlie’s partner Lou, were by his side and he was surrounded by love. His beloved dog Simba had spent the previous evening with him.
Steve was a wonderful husband, father, brother, and friend. Although ill for seven years, he was never defined by his disease and continued to live with love and compassion.
He was brave, forever optimistic, and his independent, mischievous free spirit, philosophical outlook and sharp wit remained until the end. Steve was curious, his love of music, art, football, running, fishing, cricket and culture made him great company. He was brilliantly friendly and welcoming to everyone and he sustained great relationships throughout the decades from the different experiences of his life. He was a connector and the lynchpin in many of his groups of friends. A true gent, kind, clever, funny, stylish. He was remarkable and it was a privilege to know and love him.
We would never be ready to lose him, and we miss him so very much. We are hugely grateful to his amazing medical team who left no stone unturned, and we take comfort from how loved he was and is. We also thank you for the outpouring of love and support over the last few weeks which has helped us all immensely.
Steve’s Funeral Service and Celebration of His Life
Steve’s funeral service will take place in the Conservatory at the
Horniman Museum on Friday 25th July 2025 at 5pm.
The Horniman is a 10-minute walk from Forest Hill train station and there are local car parks if you’re driving. You can find the full travel details on the
Plan Your Visit section on their website.
A couple of useful bits of information about the Horniman – there are beautiful gardens and a café if you want to arrive early. Please come prepared for British summer weather and if it’s very hot you may need your sunglasses and a fan in the conservatory. There is no dress code for the funeral.
After the funeral, we’ll gather at The Wood House, from 6.30pm to 9.30 pm to celebrate Steve’s life, share stories and memories over some food and drinks. The Wood House is a 15–20-minute walk from the Horniman or you can take the 363 Bus up the hill.
Please RSVP using the form below.
We’d absolutely love for you to share your stories or photos of Steve in advance and if you have a song that reminds you of him we’ll build a playlist. Please email Jo at jobrandl170@gmail.com with your memories, photos or tunes.
Donate in Steve’s memory
Steve was treated by the brilliant Dr Piers Patten and his team at Kings College Hospital for seven years. Dr Patten’s relentless pursuit of new treatment options for Steve gave us precious time together for which we are forever grateful.
If you’d like to donate to further research and care for leukaemia and lymphoma patients, the Kings College Hospital charity was close to Steve’s heart. You can donate here.
To ensure your donation goes to the Leukaemia and Lymphoma fund, please put Steve Brandl in the section that says “I am making a donation in memory of a loved one”
We thank you for any donation you’d like to make and ask you not to send flowers for the funeral.
With love to you all,
Jo, Charlie, Daniel, Grace & Pat
