TIMOTHY RICHARD HORNSBY

22 September 1940 – 6 August 2026

Timothy Hornsby - memorial, Horniman

Timothy passed away peacefully surrounded by love and family. We – being his two children, Gaby and Adrian, his wife Charmian, and his grandchildren Laurie and Bea – invite you to a memorial event to celebrate his dynamic energy, colourful character and enjoyment of life on:

 Monday 28 September 2026, 2.30pm

in the Conservatory at The Horniman Museum
100 London Road, Forest Hill, London SE23 3PQ

Timothy was Chair of the Horniman for many years, and it was a place dear to his heart, so it feels fitting to gather there for a service followed by afternoon tea.

Please RSVP by 14 September to let us know if you plan to attend.

The memorial will also be livestreamed for those unable to make it in person.

Contributions
Many thanks for all the kind words and stories we have received so far – they have been wonderful to read. If you have more to add, or haven’t been in touch already, we would love to hear from you. Timothy had a broad network of friends, family and colleagues, and a remarkably diverse career that spanned many organisations and sectors. We know some of the history but certainly not all, and not all the details. So do please share your memories, photos, any biographical details you may know (including dates at different organisations), and especially stories by emailing us here. We hope to include some in the memorial.

Afternoon Tea
Following the memorial service, we will be offering afternoon tea in the Conservatory to gather and share memories. Sandwiches, cakes, tea, coffee and wine will be available from 3.30–5.30pm.

Dress
We are thinking of this as a celebration, so please don’t feel obliged to wear black. Timothy was quite a flamboyant dresser, with a penchant for colourful cravats, dramatic capes and natty waistcoats, so if you have something fabulous, wear it!

Directions & Parking
Please arrive by 2.15pm for a 2:30pm start. If you arrive early, do visit the beautiful Horniman gardens or enjoy a coffee in the cafe.

The Horniman website has information to help plan your visit. Parking immediately around the Horniman is limited, but there is a pay-and-display car park behind Sainsbury’s (towards the station), and two further pay-and-display car parks at Forest Hill station, both around 10 mins walk away. There is limited blue badge parking on site – please let us know if you will need this.

Public transport options include trains to Forest Hill Station and numerous buses.

Donations
We kindly ask you don’t send flowers, but if you would like to make a contribution, we invite charitable donations. Timothy sat on the boards of numerous charities, and to celebrate them, we have created a donations pot which will be divided equally among them. The rather impressive list runs: Field Lane Charity, the Horniman Museum and Gardens, the International Tree Foundation, King’s College Hospital Charity, and the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew.

Timothy also sat on the boards of The Audience Agency, the British Architectural Trust Board, the Charles Darwin Trust, the Consumer Council for Water, the Harkness Fellows Association, the Legacy Trust, the Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission, and the National Lottery Commission. However these are organisations are not actively fundraising at the moment (and in a few cases have been dissolved), and so have not been included in the donations list.
