Supporting People Bereaved by Suicide
Join Amy and Ian from South East London Suicide Bereavement Service for a thoughtful and practical session exploring the experience of bereavement following suicide, and how we can better support people living through it.
The session will look at some of the myths and assumptions surrounding suicide, the importance of language, and the complex emotions that can follow a death by suicide — including guilt, anger, unanswered questions and emotional overwhelm.
Amy and Ian will also explore the practical realities people may face, including investigations and inquests, the impact these processes can have on funeral arrangements, and the ways suicide can affect family relationships, decision-making and spirituality.
The session will offer practical guidance for anyone supporting somebody bereaved by suicide, including:
how to respond without trying to “fix” someone’s grief
helpful and unhelpful things to say
how to talk sensitively about suicide
supporting people through difficult practical decisions and processes
asking about suicidal thoughts and knowing when and where to signpost for further support
There will also be an introduction to the South East London Suicide Bereavement Service, including how the service works and how to make a referral.
There will be time for questions and discussion, with care taken throughout to acknowledge the potentially sensitive nature of the subject.
The session is suitable for: funeral directors, celebrants, counsellors and therapists, healthcare and social care professionals, community and faith leaders, people personally affected by suicide, and anyone who wants to feel more confident supporting someone who has been bereaved by suicide.
No specialist knowledge or professional experience is required.
