Life. Death. Whatever.

  • Sutton House

In collaboration with the National Trust’s Sutton House the ‘Mary Poppins of Death’ Louise Winter and end-of-life doula Anna Lyons present Life. Death. Whatever.

Throughout the month of October, Sutton House will host an eclectic lineup of events, installations and workshops curated by the duo, encouraging creative reflection on life, death and everything in-between.

Sutton House, the oldest residence in east London, features medieval foundations, a Tudor kitchen, Jacobean and Georgian interiors, an Edwardian chapel, 80s graffiti under the roof and an urban oasis with an edible garden.

The house and garden will play host to an exhibition and a playful and lively lineup including a series from The Good Funeral Guide. Think chemists, cemetery angels, poets, perfumers, puppeteers and DJs meeting to celebrate the inevitable - wherever it is we’re all going to end up and our journey to getting there.

There’ll be cocktails, cake, tea, tears and much more.

Expect the unexpected.

It's your funeral!

  • Ziferblat

Death never looked so... alive

Join the Mary Poppins of Death, Miss Louise de Winter, for a sendup of a very British sendoff.  She’ll be taking you on a whirlwind tour of the UK funeral industry via the dusty net curtains of Doom, Gloom & Son, rotting funeral flowers, glossed-over grief poetry and accidentally putting her head in the cremator.

With a wake's worth of sausage rolls at her disposal, she'll share a mix of heartbreak, heartache and heartwarming stories from the funeral frontline.  Come along to discover the well kept secrets that keep the UK funeral industry alive, and pick up a few ideas for your own enlightened and inspired funeral along the way.

This is your opportunity to get all your awkward deathly questions answered.  What goes on behind the scenes at the crematorium?  What exactly is embalming?  Are funeral directors as creepy as they look?  What's the problem with FUN-E-RALS?  What's with the standard British funeral?  Why are there so many sausage rolls?

There may be tears, there may be laughter, there may even be tears of laughter.

Sausage rolls (British funeral fare of choice) will be provided.  A soundtrack of popular funeral music will be played.  Expect Frank Sinatra, Robbie Williams and All Things Bright & Beautiful.

Death Cafe @ Asylum (Family friendly)

  • Asylum - Caroline Gardens Chapel

Join hosts Laura-Jane Smith, Louise Winter, Anna Lyons and David Blackwell at Asylum London, to discuss all matters of death, dying, life and living over tea and cake in beautiful surroundings.

Caroline Gardens Chapel, also known as Asylum, in Peckham, forms the heart of London’s largest complex of almshouses originally known as the Licensed Victuallers’ Benevolent Institution Asylum, a sanctuary for retired pub landlords (or ‘decayed members of the trade’ as they were known at the time).  Gutted by an incendiary bomb during the Second World War, it has been run as an art space since 2010.

This event is open to people of all ages and will be family friendly so please bring children if you wish to. There will be spaces for child-inclusive and adult-only conversations so that everyone feels comfortable. There will also be activities for children (and those who are children at heart).

Everyone is welcome, but please book a ticket in advance.

This event is part of Dying Matters Awareness Week, placing the importance of talking about dying, death and bereavement firmly on the national agenda. The 2016 Awareness Week runs from 9-15th May and is themed 'The Big Conversation'.

In honour of London Month of the Dead 2015, Miss Louise de Winter will be hosting a death cafe at Abney Park Cemetery.

With the tube soon to run 24 hours a day London will truly be a city that never sleeps, but for generations of Londoners who went before us it is a place of eternal rest.

Throughout October 2015 and concluding on All Souls Day, we will be hosting The London Month of the Dead, investigating the capital’s relationship with its deceased residents. Events will include a tour of Hyde Park’s pet cemetery, a private view of the Museum of London’s bone archive, taxidermy workshops and a series of weekend death salons with talks on subjects ranging from public dissection and body snatching to reincarnation and funereal folklore. Each salon will feature a pair of speakers, authorities in fields such as osteology, forensic pathology and the paranormal, who will offer their own perspectives and insights on mortality in the city.

Death Cafe is a free event devoted to discussing all aspects of mortality over light refreshments.
